The Basics of Search Engine Optimization
Search Engine Optimization is the term used to describe the activities and efforts which go in to optimizing a website so that it reaches a top rankings in Google and other important search engines.
SEO can be divided into two parts: on page optimization and off page optimization.
On page SEO is all the things you can influence on your website. This means setting the title of your website to your desired search term, setting H1 tags, including your target search term a minimum of 1% in your page contents and containing other pages such as a privacy policy, a contact page and an “about us” page. All these things add up to give you a strong on page setup. On page SEO is important but the things you do “off-page” are far more important. Some people estimate that on page SEO only accounts for approximately 15 – 20% of your final search engine ranking.
The second and far more important phase of search engine optimization is the off page work. Off page SEO is largely made up of building links to your website. What I mean by this is creating links on other peoples websites that point to your website. There are literally hundreds of ways to do this and the more you vary your efforts the better effect you’ll get. A good place to start when building links to your website is an article directory such as Ezine Articles. If you submit an article about your specific topic to an article directory such as Ezine Articles you’ll be able to gain 2 backlinks to your website in the resources section which is just underneath the article. These links can be very powerful – especially if they are added to over time.
Another way to build links to your website is to create a mini-site using a web 2 property such as Squidoo or Hub Pages. Both of these sites allow users to add content to a personalized page – this is another very easy way to build powerful backlinks.
